All city employees shall be entitled to six consecutive paid days off for bereavement following the death of a parent, step-parent, spouse, parent of a spouse, child, step-child, grandchild, step-grandchild, or foster child; and three consecutive paid days off for bereavement following the death of a grandparent, grandparent of a spouse, sibling, step-sibling, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, sister-in-law or brother-in-law. For employees working 24-hour shifts, said employees shall be entitled to two consecutive days off for bereavement following the death of a parent, step-parent, spouse, parent of a spouse, child, step-child, grandchild, step-grandchild, or foster child; and one paid day off for bereavement following the death of a grandparent, grandparent of a spouse, sibling, step-sibling, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, sister-in-law or brother-in-law. Each bereavement day must be approved in advance by the employee's department head. For exigent circumstances, an employee's department head may authorize the bereavement days set forth above to be taken as non-consecutive days. A current city employee may receive up to four hours paid time off to attend the funeral of a current or former city employee if approved in advance by the employee's department head.
