FIRE PROTECTION FACILITIES FOR ESTABLISHMENT SERVING FOOD TO THE PUBLIC.
(a) Every owner, tenant or operator of any establishment serving food to the public, including private clubs that use any cooking appliance such as electrical or gas-fired ranges, deep-fat fryers, broilers, roasting ovens and other commercial cooking appliances shall provide hoods, ventilating facilities and automatic fire extinguishing systems protecting the appliances, hoods and ducts above and below filters, and shall be installed, maintained and serviced in accordance with NFPA cooking and kitchen hood standards.
(b) Any new installation or servicing, system with components that are no longer serviceable (from age or discontinued parts), must be upgraded to a UL300 system. Systems whose pressure tanks expire from hydrostatic testing dates must be upgraded to a UL300 system.
(c) All persons/companies that install, maintain or service any cooking hood, appliance or extinguishing system shall be registered with the City of Bedford Heights Building Division and install and service equipment in accordance with this Code and NFPA Codes of installation, servicing and maintenance of hood systems for cooking/preparation of food.
(d) Any replacement or new installation of nozzle piping shall be made of non-oxidizing piping (stainless steel). Puffing of discharge nozzles must be done with pressurized nitrogen. The code official may require a complete discharge of the system on all acceptance tests.
(e) Cleaning of all hood systems shall be done in accordance with NFPA 96 cleaning and maintenance guidelines. Hood cleaning contractors must register with the city through the Building Division and provide a copy of their cleaning standard.
(f) Plans and specifications shall be submitted to the Fire Chief or his/her designee and Building Division for approval prior to installation. After the installation, the fire protection system shall be tested under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief or his/her designee. If, upon inspection by the Fire Chief or his/her designee, any such cooking appliances are found not to be protected by an automatic fire extinguishing system as required, the Fire Chief or his/her designee shall order the owner, tenant or operator of such facilities to submit plans and specifications to him for the installation of such system according to approved plans. Such plans and specifications shall be submitted within six months of receipt of such order and the installation of such system shall be completed within one year of receipt of such order, except that the Fire Chief or his/her designee may grant an extension of such time limits for delays caused by factors beyond the control of the person or persons so ordered.
