921.02 SANITARY SEWERS.
(a) Pipe Construction. All sanitary sewers installed and constructed in the City shall be constructed of vitrified clay, cast iron, concrete, type "K" or "L" copper tube, or ABS or PVC pipe listed for that purpose in TABLE 4101:2-51-05(A) of the Ohio Administrative Code except that in areas over which there shall be heavy traffic, copper, ABS and PVC pipe shall be prohibited and cast iron shall be preferred. Pipe shall have joints or fittings, where applicable, as hereinafter specified.
(b) Joint Materials.
(1) Vitrified clay, cast iron and concrete pipe joints. The pipe shall have the joint material on both the bell and spigot ends of the pipe and shall be of a flexible plastic material manufactured from plasticized resins of polyvinyl chloride. Such material shall be securely bonded to the pipe at the factory, in molds so shaped as to fabricate a convex ring on the spigot end of the pipe and a symmetrical concave ring in the bell end of the pipe. The material shall be such dimensions that when the two ends are engaged, a mechanical joint under uniform compression is formed. However, such pipe in excess of eighteen inches in diameter may have joints composed of plasticized resin compounds other than polyvinyl chlorides, with or without the insert of a ring, but shall be impervious to sanitary and industrial sewage wastes and bacteria.
Calked joints for cast iron bell and spigot soil pipe shall be firmly packed with oakum and filled with molten lead not less than one inch deep, calked tight, and the surface of the lead of the completed joint shall be not more than one-eighth inch below rim of hub.
(2) Copper pipe joints. Copper pipe joints shall be flaired. Soldering of joints is prohibited.
(3) ABS and PVC pipe. Joint shall be made in conformance with the applicable materials and use standards of the particular plastings being used under the conditions of rule 4101:2-51-05 of the Ohio Administrative Code.
(4) Cleaning during installation.
A. Vitrified clay, cast iron and concrete pipe. During installation, the joint material on both the bell and spigot ends shall be wiped clean and thoroughly wetted with clean water or coated with a lubricant furnished by the manufacturer to facilitate assembly. The spigot end shall be inserted in the bell and pressure applied until the pipe is properly sealed. The joint, when engaged, shall be flexible enough to allow reasonable deflection in any direction and still maintain uniform compression.
B. Copper pipe. During installation, joints shall be wiped clean with the appropriate abrasive materials. The joint when engaged, shall be flexible enough to allow reasonable deflection in any direction and still maintain uniform compression.
C. ABS and PVC pipe. During installation, joint materials used shall be wiped clean with appropriate cleaner as specified in the Ohio Administrative Code. The joint, when engaged, shall be flexible enough to allow reasonable deflection in any direction and still maintain uniform compression.
(c) Fittings. All fittings used with the pipe shall also use the joint material specified in subsection (a) hereof for the pipe to which they are applied, at both ends, and shall be of the same type and quality as the pipe to which they are applied.
(d) Diameter. All sanitary sewers in single-family, two-family and multiple-family homes shall be of the material herein specified and shall have a minimum diameter of five inches. Sanitary sewers in industrial buildings, factories, shops and business establishments shall be of the same material herein specified but shall be of such diameter as the Municipal Engineer shall specify. The Engineer's required sizes shall be based upon the sewage capacity of such industrial building, factory, shop or business establishment.
