(A) Sick leave with pay is not a right which an employee may demand, but a privilege granted by the Board of Commissioners for the benefit of an employee due to illness. Notification of the employee’s desire to take sick leave should be submitted to the employee’s supervisor prior to the leave or not later than two hours after the beginning of the employee’s scheduled workday.
(1) Personal or family illness.
(a) Sick leave may be used for:
1. Rest or recuperation during or after illnesses or injuries, including pregnancy and childbirth-related illnesses; and
2. Personal and immediate family health care appointments and treatment.
(b) Family members for this section include children and/or spouses living in the homes of employees.
(2) Deaths. Sick leave may be used to:
(a) Attend funerals;
(b) Make arrangements for funerals; and
(c) Handle affairs of deceased family members.
(B) A maximum of four hours per occurrence is allowed for non-family members; up to five days sick leave may be used in the event of the death of a spouse, child, or parent; and two days sick leave may be used in the event of the death of other family members. Other family members include parents-in-law, grandmothers and grandfathers, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and grandsons and granddaughters.
(1) Accrual rate. Full-time employees will accrue sick leave at the rate of one day each calendar month worked.
(2) Maximum accrual. Sick leave may be accumulated without limit.
(3) Abuse.
(a) Employees are expected to use sick leave for health-related absences only.
(b) When a pattern of an excessive number of hours or the frequency of use of sick leave indicates possible abuse, supervisors may require a certification from a health care provider concerning the nature of the illness.
(c) Abuse of sick leave may result in disciplinary action.
(4) Transfer of sick leave. Unused accumulated sick leave may be transferred from one government unit to another if the unit to which the transfer is being made will accept the leave. This includes transfers between state and local units. The county will accept sick leave transfers.
