A. The village of Beach Park or law enforcement agency shall immediately, upon receiving any dog, cat, or other animal, make a complete registry thereof entering the breed, color and sex of such animal whether registered or not and if bearing a tag, the number thereof. The owner, if known, of each dog, cat, or other animal impounded shall be sent a notice by the health department at his last known address, such notice to be sent by registered or certified mail or hand delivered with a return receipt requested. Any dog or cat or other animal impounded under the provisions of this chapter not redeemed from the animal control pound within seven (7) days of actual notice, if the owner is known, or three (3) days, if the owner is unknown may be disposed of at the discretion of the administrator. A reasonable attempt will be made to locate the owner of each dog or cat received.
B. No registered dog or cat, bearing an official Lake County or other valid rabies tag, except those suffering because of severe physical disability, may be disposed of unless the health department has received the return receipt hereinbefore provided for or has received the registered or certified letter to the registered owner returned undeliverable.
C. If an impounded dog, cat, or other animal has bitten a person, the impoundment period shall be ten (10) days unless the administrator authorizes a reduced period. (Refer to subsection 6.06.050D of this chapter.)
D. Animals suffering because of severe physical disability may be disposed of at the discretion of the administrator in a humane manner. (Ord. 2007-O-84 § 2)
