(A) Qualifications: In accordance with Illinois state law, 65 Illinois Compiled Statutes 5/3.1-30-21, the city of Atlanta establishes the following hiring standards for part time police officers:
1. Be a citizen of the United States; and
2. Be twenty one (21) years of age; and
3. Be a high school graduate or the equivalent; and
4. Possess a valid Illinois driver's license; and
5. Possess a current Illinois firearms owner identification card; and
6. Have no felony criminal record; and if a misdemeanor criminal record, a copy of the record should be submitted with the written application required in subsection (A)12 of this section and an explanation if required by the chief of police to explain all circumstances of the record; and
7. Submit fingerprints for examination by Illinois state police bureau of identification and federal bureau of investigation; and
8. Submit to a physical examination, at the expense of the city of Atlanta, and be found drug free and in good general health; and
9. Pass a written exam if the city council opts to administer a standard entry level law enforcement test; and
10. Submit to an oral interview before the city council or its police committee; and
11. Be trained in accordance with the Illinois police training act, as may be amended from time to time, and the rules and requirements of the Illinois law enforcement training and standards board; and
12. Submit a written application and/or resume to the chief of police or the mayor in the case of a part time police chief appointment.
(B) Appointment: The mayor is hereby authorized to appoint, by and with the advice and consent of the city council, such persons of a suitable character, a part time police chief or part time police officers, whenever in his judgment he shall deem it to be necessary, but the number of hours a part time officer may work within a calendar year is restricted.
(C) Compensation: The part time police chief and part time police officers shall receive such compensation as the city council may from time to time determine. (Ord. 12-05, 5-1-2012)
