There is hereby established a police department of the city, which shall consist of the mayor, aldermen, chief of police and such police officers as may from time to time be appointed by the mayor and approved by the city council. The position of the chief of police is established as an officer of the city as defined in title 1, chapter 5 of this code and the chief of police is subject to all provisions in title 1, chapter 5 of this code.
