There is established an Economic Development Council of the City which shall serve as an advisory board to advise and assist the Economic Development Department in the promotion of economic development within the City. The Economic Development Council shall study, review and prepare recommendations for the City Council regarding matters of economic development policy.
The Economic Development Council consists of nine members whose term of office is three years on a staggered basis and who are appointed by the Mayor subject to the approval of the City Council. The Mayor shall appoint said members who represent different perspectives that are relevant to economic development in Ankeny. Members of the Economic Development Council may include nonresidents who work in Ankeny; however, a majority of the members shall be residents of Ankeny.

The duties of the Economic Development Council include, but are not limited to:
1. Propose an economic development action plan for the City to include long-term strategies for economic development.
2. Recommend economic development policies and programs to the City Council.
3. Work with the City's economic development staff in promoting the City, attracting economic growth and development, and retaining businesses in the community.
4. Provide individual assistance with specific projects and strategy development.
5. Make an annual report to the City Council regarding economic development achievements.
