(A) Trees. No trees other than those included in the following street tree species list may be planted as street trees without permission of the City Manager or his or her duly appointed agent(s). The street tree species list is comprised of three size classes based on mature height: small, medium, and large trees. The list of recommended trees shall be updated periodically to reflect new developments or species that affect the population of the community forest. The purpose, size and shape of the species at maturity should be considered before planting. Efforts should be made to ensure a sufficient diversity of tree species. The following is a list of recommended trees by common name:
(1) Canopy - Large.
(a) Red Maple;
(b) Sugar Maple;
(c) White Pine;
(d) Willow Oak;
(e) Water Oak;
(f) Red Oak;
(g) White Oak;
(h) Hickory;
(i) Yellow Poplar (Tulip Tree);
(j) American Elm; and
(k) Sycamore.
(2) Medium.
(a) American Holly;
(b) Post Oak;
(c) Black Locust (medium to large);
(d) River Birch;
(e) European White Birch; and
(f) Carolina Silverbell.
(3) Small.
(a) Red Mulberry; and
(b) Japanese Maple.
(4) For Spring Color-Small.
(a) Flowering Dogwood;
(b) Redbud;
(c) Flowering Crabapple;
(d) Purple-Leaf Plum; and
(e) Japanese Cherry.
(5) For Summer Color-Small. Crepe Myrtle.
(6) For Fall Color-Large. Ginkgo (male variety).
(7) For Fall Color-Small. Purple Leaf Plum (Spring to Fall-Purple Foliage).
(B) Shrubs. The following is a sample list of recommended landscaping shrubs by common name:
(1) Maple leaf Viburnum;
(2) Purple Beautyberry;
(3) Flowering Quince;
(4) Hedge Cotoneaster;
(5) Fragrant Sumac;
(6) Azalea;
(7) Japanese Barberry;
(8) Carolina Allspice;
(9) Sargents Chinese Juniper;
(10) Rug Juniper;
(11) Nandina;
(12) Japanese Holly;
(13) Laurel cherry;
(14) Rhododendron; and
(15) Camellia.
(C) Recommended species. The list of recommended street tree species/landscaping shrub species shall be available to residents of the city upon request to aid in the selection of trees for private properties.
