5-1-8: AUXILIARY POLICE:
   A.   The mayor may appoint, with the approval of the city council, at any time, any number of auxiliary police to serve without pay from the city, to act as watchmen in and about shops, factories, buildings, parks, cemeteries, and other places, and to perform such other functions authorized by law. They shall have all the qualifications required in the case of regular police; except, that the minimum age requirement shall be eighteen (18) years. They shall take and subscribe the same oath and exercise the same powers, and be subject to the rules and regulations of the police department, so far as the same may be applicable to them, but shall not be paid anything by the city for their services unless called upon by the mayor to assist the regular police, when, in such case, they may be paid not to exceed the amount per day paid for like services performed by other special police. They shall wear their appropriate identification when performing any official duty.
   B.   The mayor may, from time to time, set a limit on the auxiliary police force as to the number of persons who shall be members thereof. (2006 Code § 6-1-7)
   C.   All auxiliary police officers shall be trained in accordance with ILETSB requirements. (Ord. 2010-8, 12-6-2010)
   D.   No member of the auxiliary police force shall carry arms except when so authorized by specific order of the mayor or chief of police and unless they have successfully completed the forty (40) hour mandatory firearms training course; and no member under the age of twenty one (21) shall be so authorized.    E.   No member of the auxiliary police shall wear auxiliary police identification when not on duty. (2006 Code § 6-1-7)
   F.   Auxiliary police officers, when on duty, shall be conservators of the peace and shall have the powers specified in 65 Illinois Compiled Statutes 5/3.1-15-25. (Ord. 2010-8, 12-6-2010; amd. 2016 Code)
   G.   The auxiliary police shall be bound by rules and regulations of the city council or, in the absence of any applicable rule or regulation, then by orders of the mayor or the chief of police.
   H.   The auxiliary police may adopt rules and regulations, but they shall not become effective until approved by the city council. (2006 Code § 6-1-7)
